Zoner Photo Studio Pro 16 (Windows only) - free August 21 and 22

Posting rules: It shouldn't need saying, but... play nice. Please keep your discussions civil. You can disagree, just don't be disagreeable. And, of course, all of the usual stuff like no spamming. Tex adds: I'll be rigorously enforcing this as we go along. We're probably going to be a small community in a little lifeboat, so we can't have members at each others' throats. This is for the sake of the project as a whole. So when you post, pretend you're speaking in person with your very wealthy auntie who has always treated you wonderfully and currently lists you prominently in her will. I won't be tossing anyone out of the forums because we are all in this together (except spammers: immediate membership cancelation), but I'll delete suspect posts right away.

Zoner Photo Studio Pro 16 (Windows only) - free August 21 and 22

Now that they've released version 17, Zoner has made version 16 of their Photo Studio Pro free for two days (it's only for Windows). I've never used Zoner, and I don't know what's special about it, but Zoner seems to have a bit of a cult following. The people who like it really like it, even though it doesn't seem to have gotten much interest otherwise.

Promotional page for CNet: http://www.zoner.com/en/cnet-special-offer-2015

It's unclear to me what the promotion's expiration time is on the 22nd. One site said 10 AM, with no time zone specified. How helpful is that? So if you're interested, I'd recommend going for it right away.

I don't recall how I found

I don't recall how I found out about Zoner, but somehow I did.  I have to say that I'm now a member of the cult, I do really like it - especially for its organization capabilities.  It deserves more recognition than it gets.

If you want/need a one-stop-shopping photo organizing & editing application, I think Zoner's a strong contender for this job; very similar to Lightroom for a lot less $$.  It has a full suite of editing tools, including RAW file development, multi-image tone-mapped HDR rendering and panoramic photo stitching; plus good organization with keywords and other methods.  It's not a non-destructive editor, but can be set up to automagically keep a copy of your original file so that if you really screw things up you can start over.  They've got a good web site for support, with lots of tips & tutorials, plus cloud-based image storage & sharing.

Interesting though that they're still only giving away version 16.  They did that a year ago too, just before they released version 17.  I wonder if version 18 is due soon & ZPS 17 will become free just before...

I tried it

I see what you mean. If you don't insist on non-destructive editing and layers, it's got just about everything I've ever seen — editing-wise, anyway — all in one place. You can even select different algorithms for Raw conversion.

non-destructive editor

Just downloaded it so link is still good.

How do you setup the non-destructive editor. to auto save original

thank you

Jeff,

Jeff,

Sorry for the delay in responding, I've been out of town for a few days.

Auto-saving the original is turned on/off somewhere in the overall preferences for the program.  It involves not only specifying that this should be done, but where to save the originals so that Zoner can retrieve them when needed.

When I get a chance I'll post more specific instructions.

Steve

Jeff,

Jeff,

Here are the instructions for setting the backups:

Upper Right: Open “Settings”
Select “Preferences”
Select “Backups” in the left-hand list
If not already active (I believe that saving backups is the default), turn on the “Automatically  back up original...” checkbox
If you don’t want the backups to be written to Zoner’s default location, use the “Browse” button to the right of the “Backups folder” line to change it.

Zoner keeps both the backup image and a database that links the backup to the original in the designated folder.

Zoner Photo Studio 18 (Win only) - $39 vs. $99 through 31 Oct

Zoner is selling the latest version (18) of their Windows-only Zoner Photo Studio for only $39 through 31 October, with coupon code FC3-EJ9-UU4. They say that version 18 has non-destructive editing, which would eliminate one of the big problems I had with Zoner 16, but I haven't actually tried Zoner 18 to see.

I have tried it briefly when it came out

With previous versions it was already possible to edit all supported formats in the raw module, but only editing of raw files was non-destructive, i.e. written into an xmp file. With version 18 this also works with other formats, so everything you can do in this module, now named Develop module, is non-destructive. The Editor module with all those tools works like before, so for things like local editing with selections, for cloning, morphing etc. etc., non-destructive editing is not available.

Zoner Photo Studio Pro 17 (Windows only) - free Nov. 18 and 19

On SharewareOnSale Zoner now offers version 17 pro for free. I noticed improved raw module, including the ability to use Adobe’s lens profiles. Plus some other changes, here is description on Wikipedia.

I actually like this version more than the new ver. 18 with changed, “simpler” interface.

Zoner 17 offered again

As already mentioned in another thread, SharewareOnSale has Zoner 17 Pro again. Since there is no really usable digiKam version for Windows available, Zoner can be a nice all-in-one program of similar kind. External editors like LightZone can be configured per extension, for example. It is stable and non-problematic, although I wouldn't use it as my default viewer, being quite a huge program, it doesn't start as fast as IrfanView and similar lightweight viewers. (That was supposedly improved in version 18, which will, so it looks, become the "giveaway" version quite soon.)
