Vista 32bit: Cannot edit raw

Vista 32bit: Cannot edit raw

Is there anybody who use Vista (HOME PREMIUM SP2 32BIT) and have a trouble opening raw files in Edit mode?

There is a bug report on github (https://github.com/Aries85/LightZone/issues/132) and so far I have not been able to find its cause.

In summary, when opening a raw to edit, v4.1.0beta versions from beta1 to beta13 cause “class java lang.NullPointException" error dialog, although v4.0.0 works without the error. Tested raw formats are .RW2, CR2 and .NEF.

I can't reproduce this issue by myself since I don't have a Vista machine, so I need your help. Also, I have no idea what made the difference between v4.0.0 and the beta1. Any information would be appreciated.

I have a Vista Laptop (I think Home Premium SP2 32 bit)

But rarely use it and do not have LZ installed on it. I can do so we I get a chance. Please remind me if I fail to followup by the end of this month.  Thanks!

Vista 32-bit Home Premium

Yes, I'm still running a 32-bit Windows Vista workstation with 4GB RAM.  I'm an Olympus user and don't recall having any issues opening ORF raw files in Edit Mode in any of the beta versions (I've tried them all).

Let me know how I can help,

GF2 and GX7 raw files open for editing

Not sure if this is what you wanted to test, but I downloaded sample raw files for each of these two models, and LZ beta13 on Windows Vista 32-bit opens them for editing without complaint.  Also tried LX100 (ok) and GH4 (unsupported).

Are tests on virtual machines of any help?

On a 64-bit virtual vista (using virtualbox on windows 7/64 host), LZ beta 13 works since I have copied MSVCR100.dll from bin folder. I might have a 32-bit virtual vista machine saved somewhere and I could even make a new one, if this could be of any real help.

VISTA (HOME PREMIUM SP2 32BIT) trouble opening raw files in Edit

Just to reiterate I was the person who open the bug report on github (https://github.com/Aries85/LightZone/issues/132) back in early Oct 2014.

Vista (HOME PREMIUM SP2 32BIT) trouble opening raw files in Edit mode

In summary, when opening a raw to edit, v4.1.0beta versions from beta1 to beta14 cause “class java lang.NullPointException" error dialog, although v4.0.0 works without the error. Tested raw formats are .RW2, CR2 and .NEF.

I do have a Vista machine and will help. I had been in email contact with ktgw0316 but have heard anything for a while.

I hope a fix is found since I like the feel of LightZone but cannot use it with my raw files.

I haven't done any proramming for a while but it must be something basic (lost?) in moving the base code from V4.0 to V4.1 since it affects all RAW files in all the beta version

good luck

Hello Adam,

Hello Adam,

Sorry to have been quiet. I uploaded two files, "dcraw_lz-mingw.exe" and "dcraw_lz-mingw-openmp.exe" today. Could you rename and put them in LightZone folder, and check if they works?

Both of them were compiled using MinGW, which is the same compiler as v3.9. On the other hand we are using Cygwin to compile v4.1.0 betas. I don't remember which compiler was used for v4.0.0, but I guess the compiler change is a possible cause of the problem.

Hi Masahiro

You say

"I uploaded two files, "dcraw_lz-mingw.exe" and "dcraw_lz-mingw-openmp.exe" today. Could you rename and put them in LightZone folder, and check if they works?"

I am assuming that (as we did before) you mean rename them to dcraw_lz.exe and replace the existing file in the LightZone folder?

Anyway that is what I did. Neither of them worked. LightZone was going to the folder where I had the test raw files (Canon, Panasonic, Nikon etc.). Before it would load thumbnails of all the files which could then be browsed but not edited.

With the two new files LightZone hangs after creating the first thumbnail. Only way to close it is to use Task Manager.

Thank you Adam, that is

Thank you Adam, that is exactly what I wanted you to do.

So, even MinGW versions don't work correctly... :( I'd like you to check another thing using dcraw_lz.exe of v4.1.0rc1.

  1. Open a command prompt. (Start > All programs > Accessory > Command Prompt)
  2. cd "C:\Users\REJANE\Pictures\GX7 TEST"
  3. "c:\Program Files\LightZone\dcraw_lz.exe" -F output -v -j -H 1 -t 0 -d -4 GX7hVFAI00125.RW2
  4. Note the output messages. (Copy & paste onto Notepad and save it)
  5. Close the window

In above steps I assume that the test raw file is "C:\Users\REJANE\Pictures\GX7 TEST\GX7hVFAI00125.RW2". Please change it to match your case. In the step 2 and 3, type those strings then hit enter key.

The step 3 will create a grayscale image file named "output.pgm" in the same directory as the raw file, if dcraw works correctry. (You can check the contents of the output.pgm using some image viewer like IrfanView, if you are interested in it.)

Please send me the output message of the step 4 and the output.pgm.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

VISTA 32 BIT dcraw_lz.exe of v4.1.0rc1 test - as requested.

Hi Masahiro

I did as requested (I used on old Nikon file - supported in 4.0 - so there is no possible issue with the newer GX7 raw).

Output from DOS window is below.

C:\Users\REJANE\Pictures\TEST RAW>"c:\Program Files\LightZone\dcraw_lz.exe" -F o
utput -v -j -H 1 -t 0 -d -4 D5100hSLI25600_NR_0.NEF
Loading Nikon D5100 image from D5100hSLI25600_NR_0.NEF ...
Scaling with darkness 0, saturation 15846, and
multipliers 1.000000 0.506805 0.727371 0.506805

Writing data to output.pgm ...

Not sure how to get the "output.pgm" file to you. I will try sending it by email. However last time I sent you a file like this you did not get it?
