Mac Beta Testing

Posting rules: It shouldn't need saying, but... play nice. Please keep your discussions civil. You can disagree, just don't be disagreeable. And, of course, all of the usual stuff like no spamming. Tex adds: I'll be rigorously enforcing this as we go along. We're probably going to be a small community in a little lifeboat, so we can't have members at each others' throats. This is for the sake of the project as a whole. So when you post, pretend you're speaking in person with your very wealthy auntie who has always treated you wonderfully and currently lists you prominently in her will. I won't be tossing anyone out of the forums because we are all in this together (except spammers: immediate membership cancelation), but I'll delete suspect posts right away.

Beta Testing

As someone who uses photo editing frequently but is on a budget due to college this software looks like the perfect fit! I was wondering if i could get into the beta, I'm not sure if this is the right place but if it isn't please point me in the right direction.

Is it possible to still download the mac beta ?

Beta testing

I would like to be involved in the Mac beta test, if possible. I see the front page says to contact someone for a link, but unless I'm blind (very possible!) I didn't see who to contact, so I'm posting here. I'm running a 2009 Macbook Pro with 4GB of RAM and 2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. Still waiting for my Macbook upgrade from work. :)

I use Lightroom on here and it functions fairly well (as well as can be expected on this hardware), but I'm looking to get away from Adobe software.

Thanks.

So far so good

I have just started testing version 4.0.0. So far I've not had any crashes or issues, but it will take me a little time to work through all of the features. As far as speed, compared to Lightroom 4, it seems comparable, tho I'm still learning how to do things in LightZone.

One thing that feels "off" to me is not being able to use my trackpad to scroll left and right. I do a lot of panorama's, sometimes stiching over a dozen shots together, so being able to easily scroll left and right (the normal 2 finger left or right swipe) would be extremely helpful. I know I can scroll using the box in the lower right, but it doesn't feel "organic", if that makes any sense. Being able to use the wheel on an external mouse to zoom in and out would be cool too.

I know that's a very small thing, but wanted to pass it along. More once I have used it some more.

Thanks!

MAC Beta Tester

Hi,

I have been using my new Fuji X-E1 for a couple of weeks and interested to post process my Fuji RAF files using LZ.

My primary workstation is MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.4. I have downloaded LZ 3.9.2 and updated the individual dcraw but unable to open the RAF file.

Kindly please involve me as LZ Mac Beta Tester.

Thanks in advance.

My LZ Beta for Mac failed to open RAF from Fuji X-E1

Hi Williams Andrews,

Thanks for the link to download Mac Beta version of LZ. I have successfully downloaded and make it run on my Mountain Lion 10.8.4.

The thing is, I am still failed to open my RAF file (RAW file from Fuji X-E1) even though I have updated the latest dcraw file in /Applications/LightZone.app/Contents/Resources/Java.

Anyone here has successfully opening RAF file using LZ Beta for Mac ? Your advise is really appreciated...

Regards,

inadiyat

I have XPro1 and XE1 working

I have XPro1 and XE1 working with my LightZone installation.

I am using OSX 10.8.4

I did not need to upgrade the DCRaw version but used the standard installation provided in the LZ installation for v4.0.

I note that you say you are using v3.9.2.  You need to upgrade to v4.0

Just downloaded and started using LightZone

I really like the work space layout with the LightZone, but on opening the software I'm directed to the purchase page or 'continue using as a trial' otherwise the work will be marked. I'm using 10.8.4 with a MP 3,1 2x4 with 24gb of RAM. I tried to download as instructed but it seems to download directly. Have I missed something … ?

tex
You did not read that box

You did not read that box very carefully.  You downloaded the old, previous version of LZ, not the new, beta version.  You want the new beta version (there's almost nothing wrong with it).  Contact me at tex@lightzoneproject.org and I'll send you the beta.

My LZ Beta for Mac failed to open RAF from Fuji X-E1

Update: It failed only on one RAF file while it can open other RAF file.

Sorry for the mess...

I love the layout and the result as well.

Be sure to watch our videos.

Be sure to watch our videos.  There's important stuff in there.  The Save video needs a modification, but there's nothing in it that will get you into trouble.

Recurring crash

Hi!

For the last couple of days, I've been having a recurring crash (LZ does give me the choice to save before quitting though) when editing my cr2 images on my iMac (2.9Ghz i5, 16Go RAM, 10.8.4).  Here are the details of the error:

I've recently changed my saving settings from jpg (maximum quality+size) to tiff (minimum size, compressed, 8 Bits/channel, 150 dpi). I don't know if this is related.  If the developpers need more info, don't hesitate to reply!

Otherwise, LZ is a wonderful product! :)

Yours truly,

dhm

tex
sorry about these crashes.

sorry about these crashes.  Someone from the Dev Team will see this and make some sense of it.  I did note the change you made, which was odd:  It seems backwards---you'd use tiff at max rez and size and 16-bit, and jpg for lower rez size and 8-bit....

Odd change

Hi!  Thanks for the reply... I'm actually exploring the features and looking to establish some kind of workflow that fits my needs... ;)

I must admit that I'm still trying to figure out the advantages/disadvantages of the different saving preferences. After watching the videos and looking in the forums, I finally understood that to get a "final" jpg, I should use the convert function. I just haven't figured out yet if the saving preferences have somekind of impact on the final converted file... If you can shed light on this, that would be wonderful!

tex
I'll be making several

I'll be making several changes to the saving and converting videos shortly (had hoped they'd be done a week ago, but life intervened...).  You can actually use saved jpg/tiff files---for printing from LZ, for emailing, and even for use in other places----but there are dangers there: the other program may not reliably deal with the .lzn files, and the other program may strip your edits out.

The saving preferences have no impact on the convert routine.  They mainly had 2 prime functions years ago:  smaller saved files could let LZ run faster (probably still true, but maybe not as much...), and storage (much less of an issue today due to ubiquitous cheap storage.  in 2006 still an issue for most).

I'd really like the LZN.jpg

I'd really like the LZN.jpg to either be a proper JPG or else the file to be a xmp file with just the description of changes applied to the RAW/JPG file.

The xmp file does not have to obey Adobe layout format but if any Keywords and Ratings data that went into the file should be readable by other applications such as Lightroom or Photoshop or other image EXIF data reading applications.

tex
I'll move this over to wish

I'll move this over to wish list later today.  Sometime this fall we'll actually start looking at this list (!)  and prioritizing possible work for the spring.

XMP sidecars

Making XMP sidecar files possible is a great idea, but please, when you're evaluating this, leave options.

I actually like the LZN approach, it clutters my system less (although i'd like the LZN save to be more consistent as mentioned in another post).

Keep up the great work !

Unable to run lightzone on OS X 10.8.5

I just downloaded 4.1-beta-3 for os x for the first time but it keeps complaining about not being able find the correct Java version.  Things I have tried (which all did not work)

o Setting JVMVersion in Info.plist to the exact version of 1.6 installed

o Trying to launch lightzone directly using Java (yields a bunch of UnsatisfiedLinkErrors, like libFASTJAI.jnilib: mach-o, but wrong architecture )

o Setiing JAVA_HOME

o I tried 4.0 before, same problems

o Cloned the github repo and tried to build from scratch, following instructurions in macosx/BUILD-macosx.md. Building fails with a lot of errors like: /usr/local/src/LightZone/lightcrafts/extsrc/com/lightcrafts/media/jai/mlib/MlibWarpRIF.java:30: package com.sun.medialib.mlib does not exist

I am on Mac OS X 10.8.5, using Java 1.6.0_29-b11-402 (also tried with 1.7.0_40)

How do I actually run this software?

Thanks for any pointers

I had an issue with beta 2

I had an issue with beta 2 where it wouldn't start because of a Java error.

It was quickly fixed in Beta 3.

You might try downloading the newest Java from Apple, not from Oracle.

Install it with no browsers open.

Tips I gleaned from the Lightzone forums.

See if it helps.

stefanp
Thanks, that helped

Even though I had a fairly recent apple 1.6 jvm, updating gave me a new control panel for Java in Preferences that revealed that the installed 1.6 JVM wasn't properly registered in the System. Adding it solved the problem and the app starts as expected.  Thanks!

version of beta test

In this thread i see mention of version 2 and version 3 of the Mac beta.

I am not aware of the different versions, how can i check and obtain the latest version? Since i'm already testing, i'd like the latest version.
