News Update for September 9, 2013

Posting rules: It shouldn't need saying, but... play nice. Please keep your discussions civil. You can disagree, just don't be disagreeable. And, of course, all of the usual stuff like no spamming. Tex adds: I'll be rigorously enforcing this as we go along. We're probably going to be a small community in a little lifeboat, so we can't have members at each others' throats. This is for the sake of the project as a whole. So when you post, pretend you're speaking in person with your very wealthy auntie who has always treated you wonderfully and currently lists you prominently in her will. I won't be tossing anyone out of the forums because we are all in this together (except spammers: immediate membership cancelation), but I'll delete suspect posts right away.

A quick news update with several items (Updated 9/10/2013. click below to read more):

  • The Mac beta will be promoted to Open Beta status before midnight today. Update: due to problems with my commuter train yesterday I got home very late and was unable to make the necessary changes.  I will try again tonight.  Interested parties will be able to download freely without contacting us.  This beta is stable and has almost no faults, but we still await fixes to the new Windows build for the new release before we re-release all builds for all OS's in alpha.
  • Good news: progress has been made on that Windows build as of this past weekend thanks to Pavel and Masahiro
  • The new release that is coming will include all our new RAW profiles, plus 3 old tools resurrected from the early days of LightZone that were left out of the program about the time that the Relight Tool was released.
  • We have come up with a couple of ideas for another future release that will improve the program without further development of new material.  These improvements may be relatively easy to implement, and so perhaps we will have another build release this fall.
  • We have begun strategizing about a possible way to recruit some more development help.  But don't wait for that if you have development skills in Java!  Please volunteer now.
  • Membership is now over 4,100 people, and the Windows and Linux download pages together have been "hit" over 30,000 times.
  • As of tonight we will run an experiment:  the download pages will be accessible only to those who have signed up as members.  More on that tonight (UTC -5:00)

intentional, bug or a problem only at my end?

Hi,

I just noticed that LZ doesn't keep my keywords I have inserted in another program I use for selecting images - is this normal?

Cheers,

Laura

tex
Not sure. Could you please

Not sure. Could you please tell us more about which program and your OS details? It is possible that it is a LightZone problem, and if so we'd like to look into it.

Hi Tex!

Hi Tex!

The program is iView MediaPro and my OS is 10.7.5.

Cheers,

Laura

another question

Hi again,

why the original colors can be seen in the browser as I shot them (and as I want them to remain) and then when I open the file in Edit mode, the program applies saturation and brightness (see screenshots below)? And when I click "As Shot" in Raw Adjustments nothing happens. I'm shooting with Canon 5D Mark II.

Thanks!

Laura

Laura---

I don't see the screenshots.  And the program should not be doing much of anything to your raws----LZ's raw tool is really simple, has no saturation controls, and is set to "zero" anyway(with the color temperature as detected) when the raw file opens in editor mode.

If you can't post your screenshots here, I'll arrange for you to send them to me directly so I can take a look.

sent!

Hi Tex,

the images appeared here when I was composing the message but then weren't displayed... Anyway I just sent them to you via email!

Thanks,

Laura

max
downloads?

Hi all :)

I signed up! but don't see any binary files, just the git sourcecode link at the top of the page is this normal!

on the left side bar all I see is help files and raw profiling center!

I do wonder a bit if it is harming the quantity of users (especily linux)  having such a restricted process to install process to get the bin files?

I am so use to apt-get install ...

You weren't yet fully

You weren't yet fully approved as a "participant".  Sorry, that wasn't clear in the messages under the Header and I will modify them.

You are now approved as a full participant and should be able to see that box in the left sidebar.

Same here... you make it

Same here... you make it really hard to look at or even use this software :/

tex
That is not correct, Sujan.

That is not correct, Sujan. Our records show that you had only completed your registration less than 1 hour and 15 minutes before I started writing this response to you.

There are 30 videos about the software on our Youtube channel, The LightZone Project, about 3 hours worth of videos---and probably another 30 or more by other authors.  We have a page full of screenshots.  These videos tell and show you quite a bit about the program.  You can now spend almost all day learning about the program without even downloading it.  Finally, it really is not too difficult to sign up as a member---you just have to have a little bit of patience to allow us to approve your membership.  Today, Doug and I have been approving people nearly every hour.  We have to do this because we are still getting some very bad spammers sneaking through our defenses.

This is not Adobe.  No one here is getting a paycheck.  In any volunteer organization, one has to have a little patience---especially considering that the program is being offered for free.  But I know for a fact, from my own experience, that you have received a response from us much faster than lots of for-profit companies would have responded to you--- we responded in just over 1 hour.  We won't always be able to match that, but today, you got great service I think.

orlcam88
I have to disagree Sujan!

The software is not difficult to find.  If you have any questions, this group is very helpful in getting you going.  All you have to do is ask.

Download problems

Hi Tex,

I registered one hour ago, but I don't see the download links for Linux, Windows, and Mac in the left sidebar. My system - Win 8 pro (x64), Firefox 23.0.1. Could it be I should wait a certain time before using your links?

Have a nice day!

UFN

tex
Yes, unfortunately you do

Yes, unfortunately you do have to wait until we can complete your approval---you are approved now.  We are still getting some "bad actors" on the spam front who are even getting past the Captcha generator.

We are trying to approve new members within 2 hours Mon-Fri 06:00-22:00 UTC -5:00, but there is a gap in there for sleep.  Weekends will be a bit more erratic, but I'll still try to get people approved within 3 hours from 07:30-22:00 UTC -5:00.

Today I'll post a message to recruit several people from other time zones to help out in the approval/forums moderation area.

Saving size

Hello, first of all a huge thanks for all the great work you do, unfortunately I don't have the skills to help.

I have some problems with the small size of the saved pictures after LZ4 changes,  it's probably due to my lack of experience. Have you a link for an explanation about how to do it and keeping the size of the original picture? I searched in the Help files and didn't find a clear solution.

Sorry if I bother you with my perhaps stupid question.... :)

Thanks a lot, PhilT

tex
You need to watch our videos.

You need to watch our videos.  The one on saving has a ....misrepresentation, let's call it...but is mainly valid.  What you are noting as small files are just the sidecar files that contain an image preview and the editing instructions.  You can make those files larger in  preferences if you wish, and that allows you to use the saved file as a full size file in other programs, for the web or email----but neither Lightcrafts originally nor I now recommend using this file for the most important purposes.  You'll want to use "convert" for best results for printing outside the program or use outside the program for other manipulations.

This is actually a bigger topic than I can cover here right now, but check out "save" and "convert"  bits in the help files, and again, check the videos on youtube

PhilT
saving files

Thanks a lot. In short, where is the "original" file stored? I did not understand clearly in the help file... sorry again but I'm quite "dumb" in these subjects

PhilT

tex
The original file is in the

The original file is in the folder where you put it...originally.  It's wherever you stored it on your computer when you moved it from your card in your camera, or wherever the scan went.  LightZone's browser allows you to find those folders within the browser and open them. When you save, you can save the .lzn sidecar file to any location---but it is recommended that you save it back to the folder with the original.  At least you should do that until you are more comfortable with the program.

Thanks a lot Tex for your patience. I'll try ASAP to find and to have a look to the video, it will take few days because I have time only during the WE. I'll give you feedback if you want.

Saving size solution found, thanks for the help

Thanks a lot Tex, I finnally succeed to get full-sized TIFF/JPEG files, using convert after save. I simply did not fully understood the convert function. Now I'm using and learning more and more LZ4 and I'm quite happy with it!!! The help files of hte functions are reallygood.

Sorry I posted twice the same subject by mistake and didn't know how to erase it, so I just put these words instead... Best regards.  PhilT
