New Version! LightZone v4.1.6 Now Available

Posting rules: It shouldn't need saying, but... play nice. Please keep your discussions civil. You can disagree, just don't be disagreeable. And, of course, all of the usual stuff like no spamming. Tex adds: I'll be rigorously enforcing this as we go along. We're probably going to be a small community in a little lifeboat, so we can't have members at each others' throats. This is for the sake of the project as a whole. So when you post, pretend you're speaking in person with your very wealthy auntie who has always treated you wonderfully and currently lists you prominently in her will. I won't be tossing anyone out of the forums because we are all in this together (except spammers: immediate membership cancelation), but I'll delete suspect posts right away.

Congratulations to our development team for pushing out yet another update: special thanks to Masahiro Kitagawa, Marinna Cole, and Giorgia Dessi. Read more after the break...

The changelog is here . DCRaw has been updated, and there are speed improvements (as reported by noted forum member Mart {Jacal}); Marinna has introduced 5 new types of crop overlays, and Giorgia has produced a new Italian translation.  Yours truly has done 19 new raw profiles (list in changelog).  If there are problems with any of those, I ask that you both A) report it on the forums, and B) send me an email through "contact" telling me about the problem, and attaching a raw file showing the problem.  The profiles were created using the Imaging Resource test shots as per usual---I don't have any of the cameras myself except the Pentax 645Z, so I don't have raw files except what I can get from IR.

This is about the 7th new version produced in the last year---amazing work!

Note, July 5, 2016:  There are now several reports of various issues with this new update.  One is my fault, which I hope to get corrected very shortly, involving the titling of the RAW Tone Curve tools for the new raw profiles.  The others are some Mac install issues (Mac is now our biggest headache on builds...), some Linux install issues (always the case, user fixable often), and a couple of others, including what looks to be a bug with the new crop overlays.  We are working on them....

Great news! Thank you very

Great news! Thank you very much for the new version, and for the 1.6.8-version!!!!!

It starts and it works. But is still must be testet with pictures :-)

Issue with new v4.1.6 and ubuntu 14.04

Many thanks, but I cannot start anymore Lightzone. I get the following error:

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/help/HelpSetException     at java.lang.Class.forName0(Native Method)     at java.lang.Class.forName(     at com.lightcrafts.platform.Platform.<clinit>(     at com.lightcrafts.platform.Launcher.init(     at com.lightcrafts.platform.linux.LinuxLauncher.main( Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:     at$     at$     at Method)     at     at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(     at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(     at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(     ... 5 more

You probably need to install JavaHelp

See this thread:

As I want to enable other programs to use javahelp, too, I copied it to /usr/share/java. Look in /usr/bin/lightzone to find out the exact file name, for which the programm looks at start, and do one out of these:

(1) Change the path to Javahelp in /usr/bin/lightzone to the actual file name

OR (2) Rename the file according to the name specified in /usr/bin/lightzone

OR (3) Create a symlink with the name used in the path in /usr/bin/lightzone pointing to the actual file.

Issue with new v4.1.6 and ubuntu 14.04 [SOLVED]

I have discovered the new lightzone PPA. I have switched to it and make an update. Issue fixed :-)

Issue with new v4.1.6

There seems to be a regression/new bug introduced in 4.1.6: it forgets the quality setting for your saved images.

In LightZone 4.1.5 it worked fine.

I have setup LightZone to save with the following preferences:

Compatible with Adobe RGB (1998)
Size: unlimited
Contents: perceptual
Quality: 96
Pixels per inch: 300

However, LightZone insists that the Quality must be 85

Whatever I do, whether I set it to 96 and save and image with that setting, or just set it and close and restart. Or just set it, close preferences, and then open preferences immediately after to check again ... it is still 85. This error persists on both Linux and Windows.

This prevents me from using v4.1.6, as the JPEG quality is immensely important for me.

Already reported here:

Thank you, Jacal, I wasn't aware of that. I will try to use the proper bug-report channel in the future :)

beginner needs help please

to exit the program

only by Ctrl+Q; using the window close [X] I receive: "LightZone failed to start last time.  Resetting your LightZone Settings may fix this.  Would you like to try resetting your LightZone Settings?"

Fresh Install Errors

Just did a fresh install with the old Java 1.6 for OSX. When I launch it comes up with a bunch of errors and then crashes:

  • Couldn't link with native library: "DCRaw
  • Couldn't link with native library: "FASTJAI
  • Couldn't link with native library: "fbf

Any ideas???

Have you taken a look

in some of the other threads relating to Macs and Mac installs?  We have had more than our usual number of errors with Mac this time....but not tremendously so:  Mac has been giving us a problem for several years now.  A pity, since originally Mac was so friendly to LZ.  But now it's our biggest headache.  Wish I could help, but I am Windows....

Have a look at this thread:

question about Java on a Mac with Elcapitan

The latest versions of LightZone will not apperently work unless I install JAVA 6. I get directed to the apple support page which calls this version of JAVA" deprecated". Is there any concern in installing JAVA 6? Should I better wait for when LightZone uses a better version of JAVA?

Thanks for all you do.

Lightzone 4.1.6 works fine

Lightzone 4.1.6 works fine here with Java 8 on Slackware64-14.2. I don't know, what Java versions are supported on the Mac.

Older versions of Java are considered unsecure and deprecated. So I recommend that you don't downgrade to Java 6. If you can, use Java 8.

hello lightzone users. i have

hello lightzone users. i have a question to ask. why when i edited my pictures when i see them in other programs they look tremendous? is that normal? i editeded a bunch of pics and they get saved on jpg but when i openthem lest say in windows viewer they look awful.what do i do? thanks.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say

But I think your problem may be related to the saving versus converting routines in LightZone.  Saving simply saves the edits in a small sidecar file with a preview jpg of those edits applied to the original.  This is the way LightZone does non-destructive editing----the original is not touched, ever.  Please read about this process in the help files or watch our tutorials about this. It may be that windows viewer is either not handling the sidecar file well, or that it is opening your original.

Converting gives you a brand new file, jpg or tif per your designation, that is an independent and separate file from your original.  This should look the way you want it to.

BTW, this message and yours are really in the wrong place---they should properly be in the forums, and not here in the announcements section.  More people are likely to see your post in the forums than here, and can help you better----especially true if my answer is not the correct one!

Hi, could some one tell me why the website presented incorrect identification, and should I be concerned?

I tried Chrome and firefox and I get the same result.

leica monochrom

Hello, this new version is great. I can use it with my leica M9 files but not with files from my LEica monochrom (first version). And i can't find a way to fix this issue. I read that DCraw 9.2 update was able to handle those files.
I am a beginner using linux and LZ.. if anyone could help me...

I will check, but....

I am not sure that Imaging Resource has a test for this camera (which we need to complete the profile).  I will be checking, though, because there are some new profiles I have to do anyway.

bug in Epson 3800 driver for Lightzone

Several years ago, just before the old Lightzone team folded up its tents, I reported a bug in the Epson 3800 driver. I sent a photo as evidence, and got a reply that yes, indeed, it was a bug and a fix was promised.  Then Lightzone underwent its change of ownership and emerged into the open source product it is now. I'm now running 4.1.7 and the bug is still there.  Whenever I print to my Epson 3800, a 1" wide artifact appears down the left edge of the print.  It's as though the last inch folds back over itself. Will there be a fix forthcoming?  I love using Lightzone, but I'm getting very tired of having to print using another program, i.e., Photoshop or Lightroom after working on an image in Lightzone.

Great job boys.
